Default Nintendo to Reveal Wii Successor at E3 2011 - Rumour.

Nintendo's Next Console to Support Blu-Ray, Use Quad-Core ARM Chip

Nintendo may reveal the first information about its forthcoming video game system at the E3 trade-show in mid-2011, according to a rumour. The console may feature Blu-ray disc support as well as a quad-core system-on-chip based on ARM architecture. The device is rumoured to be released next year.

Nintendo Wii game console revolutionized the market of video game systems in 2006 with its motion sensing controller, forced Microsoft Corp. as well as Sony Corp. to answer with their own motion-sensing technologies years later and brought Nintendo back into the game. Nonetheless, what was innovative five years ago became outdated nowadays and Nintendo needs to introduce a more advanced game console now in order to compete against PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, so far the company has been extremely tight-lipped about the next-gen console that will succeed the famous Wii.

The firm plans to break the silence about the descendant of Wii at this year Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade-show that will take place June 7-9, 2011 at the Los Angeles convention center, reports Zelda Informer web-site.

The device will be based on a quad-core Marvell Armada system-on-chip that is compliant with ARM architecture, will feature integrated Blu-ray reader and will sport "a mobile projector of some sort". While this is about time for Nintendo to start talking about its future game console at this year's E3, the rumoured specifications do not seem to be credible. Nintendo used microprocessors based on IBM's Power architecture as well as proprietary optical disc standards for both GameCube and Wii consoles and it is not very likely that the company decides to radically change its approach with the next-generation console. Interestingly, but the rumoured console even does not have a code-name.

According to the report, Nintendo will launch the successor of Wii in late 2012, which is a logical timeframe. Still, it may be too late as the console that will be released in 2012 will inevitably compete against Microsoft's and Sony's consoles to be launched in 2014 - 2016 timeframe and which will be much more powerful.

Nintendo did not comment on the news-story.

Nintendo is one of those classics that wont easily die, the Wii competed with the 360 and ps3 and has survived, no telling what the next gen can do.

Well, all Nintendo is doing is upgrading their current systems. The DS, Lite, X1, 3D, for example. Now the Wii.

But they were the first ones to have motion sensors, right?
