Mists of Pandaria was rumored a while back to be the name of the next expansion pack for World of Warcraft. Blizzard countered by saying Pandaria and the Pandaren weren't the sort of material to expect from the fourth expansion. It turns out that was a bit of misdirection, as those panda-like creatures are precisely what we're going to see a great deal of in the newest expansion.
The announcement were set up by Blizzard's Chris Metzen talking about how previous expansions all dealt with a big new enemy who threatened everyone. He explained that the new expansion focuses on war and conflict between the Alliance and Horde before a trailer for Mists of Pandaria was shown.
The areas seen in the video featured an Asian style of architecture and gave us our first look at the brand-new Pandaren race that will be playable by members of the Alliance and Horde. Perhaps more exciting than a new playable race is the first new class since Wrath of the Lich King, the Monk. Also introduced was the new continent of Pandaria, a level cap of 90, challenge mode dungeons, PVE scenarios, a pet battle system, and a new talent system.
None of this was explored in any detail. Luckily there are more than a handful of World of Warcraft panels set to take place over the next two days so expect to hear a lot more about Mists of Pandaria before long.
