Default 'Mass Effect 3' release pushed back to 2012

The ongoing journey of Commander Shepard will have to wait until next year.

BioWare has confirmed through its official Facebook page that sci-fi epic Mass Effect 3 will launch in the first three months of 2012.

"The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations," says Casey Hudson, executive producer of the franchise, in a statement.

Mass Effect 3 -- originally slated to launch this holiday season -- stars Commander Shepard as the Earth faces an invasion from the Reapers.

The game follows up 2010's Mass Effect 2, one of the year's best games.
