Default Launch Pad: the week of April 17

Welcome to Launch Pad, our weekly look at the notable video games, demos and other interactive goodies hitting stores or online outlets.

Not sure whether "Tale of the Tape" isn't a more appropriate title, considering we have a couple heavyweights preparing to enter the retail ring.

So, in the words of boxing referee Mills Lane, "let's get it on!"

Retail games launching April 19

Portal 2
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Platform(s): PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Details: The companion cube and portal gun are now joined by fresh projects such as thermal discouragement beams (the "scientific" term for lasers), aerial faith plates and propulsion gel. And let's not forget GLADOS.

Mortal Kombat
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Details: The longtime fighting game is back to its bloody roots, with bones cracking and limbs flying. Anything tops the tamer brutalities found in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

SOCOM 4
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Platform(s): PlayStation 3
Details: Zipper Interactive brings back the team-based, tactical shooter, now compatible with 3-D, PlayStation Move and the Sharp Shooter peripheral. There's also multiplayer matches hosting up to 32 players.

Prince of Persia Trilogy HD
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PlayStation 3
Details: For the players preferring to revisit a classic franchise, there's always Ubisoft's HD remake of the Prince of Persia series.

Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PlayStation Portable
Details: The classic role-playing game is reborn in a compilation featuring the original Final Fantasy IV as well as the sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

Xbox Live

Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta
Details: Although all Xbox 360 owners will have access to this next week, copies of the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm will also grant you a chance to check out the multiplayer mode. It features game types such as King of the Hill and Team Deathmatch.

Release Date: April 20
Details: Side-scrolling platformer featuring a hand-drawn art style makes the jump from Web browsers to consoles. The game stars Fancy Pants Man as he attempts to rescue his sister Cutie Pants.
