Default VIA Preps New USB 3.0 Controller for Hard Drives

We still have a ways to go until AMD and Intel implement native USB 3.0 support on their motherboards, but in the meantime, third-party chip makers have picked up the slack. NEC is one of them, and so is VIA, the latter of which has begun sampling new USB 3.0 controllers for external hard drives, DigiTimes reports.

The new solution, dubbed VL701, received certification from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) and will come in either a 64-pin LQFP (Quad Flat Pacakge with leads extending from all four sides) or 48-pin QFN (quad flat packages with no leads) form.

VIA isn't alone in releasing a new SuperSpeed controller. Both ASMedia Technology and JMicron are mass shipping new USB 3.0 solutions of their own.
