Default Samsung Begins Mass Producing 30nm-class 32GB Memory Modules

Quote:
Samsung is off to a fast start with its 32GB memory modules using 30nm-class, 4Gb (gigabit) DDR3 DRAM chips and is the first in the industry to start producing these parts. These massive memory kits won't end up in home systems, few of which could actually support that amount of RAM in the first place, but in cloud computing environments and advanced server systems where there's no such thing has having too much memory.

"With this module, Samsung has secured the highest level of product and solution competitiveness in the DRAM market for PC, server and mobile applications," said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. "We also plan to ship more energy-efficient 4Gb DDR3 DRAM based on 20nm-class process technology in the second half of this year, which will significantly expand the rapidly growing market for green IT memory solutions. Moreover, we intend to keep delivering the greenest memory products with optimal performance for customers."

Samsung says its 30nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips offer increased productivity in the neighborhood of 50 percent compared to 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3. Because of this, Samsung expects rapid market penetration.

The company's new 1.35V 32GB RDIMM serves up a whopping 1,866Mbps, representing a 40 percent improvement over a 1,333Mbps 40nm-class 32GB RDIMM operating at 1.5V.

I'm sure it won't be long before that amount of memory becomes commonplace in home systems. My first home computer had only 256KB of memory, my current computer has 8GB - a 32,000X increase. These 32GB modules are only a 4X increase.

8GB is the norm with 32GB out now. When 256k was common it was like 12-15 years ago and the most you could have at the time was possible 4MB depending on the era you had that PC. Just like 2 or 3 years ago 2GB was the common thing and now 8-12 is.

Even longer. 256k was common from 1987-1990. 12-15 years ago Windows 95 was already out and usually required at least 16MB of memory. 64GB of RAM would be very nice for the work I do. Can't wait until they're affordable.

Even further back. I got my first computer in 1984 with 256KB on the motherboard. Somewhere about that time is when Bill Gates stated that no one would ever need more than 640KB of RAM.

You must have had a pretty elite machine. I believe it wasn't too common until 2-3 years later. I remember using our Windows 2 (although we used DOS much more still) system with a whopping 384K in 1991.

Nothing elite, just a plain IBM PC with 256KB on the motherboard.

Tell me about it, especially if your heavily reliant on virtualiseation like myself I can see it now a nice 1/2U unit with 8 300gb SAS drives, 4 Opterons with 6 cores each and 4 32gb sticks of this stuff, that's alot of VM's on that box.
