Default Overclocker Takes Unreleased Intel Core i7 2700K Processor to 5GHz on Air

There's reason to be excited about the upcoming launch of Intel's Core i7 2700K processor. News of this processor's existence and eventual release were leaked to the Web just a few weeks ago, and already engineering samples have fallen into adventurous hands. One person who got their mitts on one put the chip through its paces by overclocking it to 5GHz on air.
That's a nice bump over the chip's stock 3.5GHz clockspeed. Getting there required setting the BCLK to 100MHz and the multiplier to x50. The overclocked chip completed a successful SuperPi run through 1M and a CPUmark pass. It's not quite the same as Prime95 or Orthos, but it is an early indicator that the chip is stable well past its rated clockspeed.
In addition to running at 3.5GHz stock, the Core i7 2700K sports a 3.9GHz Turbo frquency, 8MB of L3 cache, Intel HD 3000 graphics (850MHz/1350MHz), dual-channel DDR3-1333 memory controller, and a 95W TDP.

Now I guess we wait around and see if AMD can beat them in the $300 range.

Aaaah after seeing stuff like this I really want to upgrade.. but I just can' push myself to yet
When this one dies entirely I'll upgrade.. but I foresee this having quite a few years left in it

I don't get the enthusiasm the blogger has over this. It's just an i7 2600K with an extra 100MHz stock. That's where the differences stop. The fact that it can get 5GHz really isn't surprising, since WOW! it's the same chip as a 2600K, which a couple members here have had above 5GHz.

Above 5ghz on water. This thing did it on air. That is what the fuss is about.

No, Slay had it at 5 on air (with the Noctua-D14 I think). I could probably get 5 on air now that the summer's passed. I got it stable at 4.7 during the height of summer, and my cooling setup isn't quite as good as his (he has a better cooler and more fans).

Well, at least I have something to test out this evening :P I'll report back on my immense success or crippling failure.

Actually 4.8 is the common clock on air for the 2600k.

I had mine at 5GHz on air, but it was hotter than I wanted. But it also gets pretty hot in Florida for a a lot longer than most places, Texas is fairly similar. Right now I wouldn't be having the heat problems like I did in the middle of summer. But it was running stable the whole time.

Ohoo. I might actually hold off on getting the 2600k if the 2700k is on it's way in.
I have an the 2500k at the moment anyway.

I hate to be "that guy", but has anybody seen any news about a release date?

Honestly, if it didn't do 5GHz on air with HT enabled I wouldn't see why it would be worth buying over the 2600K
