Default OCZ Reaches Agreement With Toshiba to Acquire Solid State Drive Business

Quote:
OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today announced that the Company has signed an asset purchase agreement with Toshiba Corporation, a global technology leader and manufacturer of NAND flash memory, to acquire substantially all of OCZ’s assets in a chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding for $35M. . . .

This acquisition will provide Toshiba with access to OCZ’s proprietary controllers, firmware and software, as well as the teams responsible for bringing these solutions to market, in addition to OCZ’s established brand and sales channels. This strategic opportunity will bring critical controller IP and NAND supply all under one global organization, allowing for an even more robust and competitive solid state solution offering for all of OCZ’s and Toshiba’s mutual customers moving forward.

Sort of saw this coming but didn't know which company would snap it up.

That might explain why I saw so many OCZ refurb drives on sale?

I heard about OCZ was going out of business, and I wonder who was going to buy them. Question is what do you think Toshiba is going to cut out production of OCZ to make them profitable again?
I know OCZ made more than just SSDs, but it sounds like that's Toshiba's main reason for buying them. (which is rather ironic considering that OCZ bought their SSD tech from Indilinx)

Here's an update: Toshiba receives approval for OCZ buyout, RIP to popular company | TweakTown

"OCZ says the asset acquisition will complete by the end of next week, and Toshiba will keep the OCZ brand alive with its full portfolio of consumer and enterprise SSD products. With the financial powerhouse that is Toshiba now behind the OCZ brand, things could turn out very well for the once falling company."

They didn't need the financial powerhouse but more rather they need to adopt some of their engineers to produce better more reliable products. Then people like myself can recommend them as a brand again so they get more cash.

I guess we'll just see what they do and if they can bring their name back with the extra help.
