Default Intel's 10-Core Xeon Processor Shipping Soon

Quote:

Intel's 8-core Nehalem-EX will be shoved aside as the chip maker's fastest server chip, conceding the performance crown to Westmere-EX, a 10-core Xeon processor. One of the talking heads at Intel said you can expect Westmere-EX to land in servers sometime in the first half of 2011, PCWorld reports. What isn't yet known is exactly how fast it will come clocked, only that it will outpace Nehalem-EX with two additional cores and improved latency.

As you might imagine, Westmere-EX is intended for high performance servers that need the additional horsepower, such as data centers maintaining large databases. Each of Westmere-EX's cores can run two threads, and since it will run in servers with up to eight sockets, there's potential for 160 simultaneous threads.

The 10-core Xeon chip is built using a 32nm manufacturing process, down from Nehalem-EX's 45nm, and is socket compatible with existing Nehalem-EX chips.

How high can they go?

AMDs been producing 12cores for about a year, and have 20cores i believe out soon.

Wasn't Intel always behind?

Intels quads even without HT smoke AMDs hex cores. So why push consumer priced hexs?

Xeons have 7 or 8 models of hex cores. The biggest thing is clock speeds, cheap hex Xeons are faster than AMDs.

But as we all know a cheap intel hex is 3 times as much almost.

These chips really have no use in a consumer desktop, other than a folding/other DC situation, so Intel isn't really to concerned i'm betting.

AMD makes up for their sloness my pushing the number of cpus. There are many 4p boasrds out there.... Imagine the power of 4 magny core amd (12 cores and 4 cpus).

That server would never get bogged down.

I don't think these chips are really competing with anything AMD offers, you could probably argue that they are actually aimed at IBM's Power7 cpu's.

They don't really have much impact on anything consumer related though, the odds of ever seeing one outside of a large corporate datacenter or HPC environment are slim to none.

^precisely..... same as the 12 core Magnys..... they are only 1.9Ghz chips, but asre designed for large loads... folding loves them

I wouldn't doubt I would see 2 of these in an SR-2 under LN2 connected to 4 580s off kingpins rig.

It'll never happen as theses are 1565, or whatever... Its a Westmere-EX chip.
