Default HP Wants to Be Cooler than Apple

Some say perception is everything and perception can be something very different when you work for a company or if you are simply a customer.

While I know that HP can be cool place to work, the outside perception isn't nearly as cool. HP's new CEO, Leo Apotheker, however, envisions HP to be just as cool as Apple. In an interview ith BBC, Apotheker said that “the Internet is going totally mobile, the bandwidth is there ... so many technologies are converging, and HP is the one company that can put it all together. We want to be the leader in this.”

“I hope one day people will say 'this is as cool as HP,' not 'as cool as Apple,'" Apotheker said. He hinted to a few drastic changes on this path. HP will kill the Palm brand and launch new products at its February 9 event as HP products. There is a clear desire to own a certain "wow factor", as Apotheker called it, that will support the future growth of the company. He sees much more potential in the company than has been leveraged in the past: “Shame on us, though,” Apotheker added. “ I don’t think HP has been telling its story as well as it could over the past few years.

It is difficult to walk into an electronics store and have the specific intent look for certain HP products today. Apotheker has a lot of work ahead. However, there has always been the notion in the industry that HP has the talent and resources to take on Apple in design and marketing. The company just needs to proof that it can really do it.

HP will never be as cool as apple when they're idea of 'design' is taking apple's design and applying a few minor tweaks to it.

also apple is so recognizable because they have a unique line of products, and were the first company to put out something radically new, and popularize it. the imac's and the idea of an all in one pc were new, and done well as well as the iphone (with the exception of the phone bit not being stellar... which i still don't understand why they don't fix. that just blows my mind). And if you ask people today about mp3 players, i would say 9 times out of 10 (on a basic consumer level) mp3 player and ipod are interchangeable terms, or an ipod is the baseline for comparisons.

no other company has the kind of brand recognition with specific devices, only exception would be with the zune, but still way more people would want an ipod than a zune.

bottom line if hp want's to be as cool as apple, they can't go about it by comparing themselves to apple. they have to create a new product that solves some basic function in a new way that makes people go **** look at that HP product. like hte ipad.

Absolutely, Apple probably has the strongest brand of any company that I can think of. That said, there is no reason whatsoever that HP cannot do the same, maybe even better.
Just like there's no reason why I can't win the lottery.

Another one to add onto the "possible but very unlikely" pile.

It's the stock market of computing. It fluctuates.

As I understand it, brand strength has nothing to do with the stock market.

i think it was more of a metaphor than a literal statement. but I would say that brand strength plays a major part in it's stock market showing. if apple came out a year and their big release product were the ipad, with not brand strength behind it, I know I wouldn't invest in them, purely because it's a risky thing to do, releasing a tablet when the tablet industry was pretty much saw the end of its days a couple years ago, regardless of how it turned out, with no brand strength or anything to go on it doesn't make for a smart investment option.

Peter your right, the iMac was done right from the start a all in one unit that can do serious computing rather than a atom box with 2gb of ddr2.
