Default User Friendly Linux System Targets Senior Citizens

It wasn't all that long ago that giving your grandparents a Linux-based PC would be nothing short of a cruel joke, But it's really a testament to how far Linux has come, and in particular Ubuntu, that there's a PC maker who specializes in Linux rigs for senior citizens. That company is KiWi PC and they've just announced a new nettop they say is perfect for seniors.

"Until now, there has not been an easy way for senior citizens to navigate the Internet and stay connected to friends and family," said Oscar Ferreira, President of KiWi PC. "Linux based KiWi PC provides the elderly with an easy way to stay in touch, learn, and game online."

On the hardware front, the KiWi PC comes with an Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.66GHz, 2GB of DDR3 memory, 250GB hard drive, DVD writer, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, integrated audio, 19-inch monitor, and a color coded keyboard. However it's the software that's really unique.

The KiWi PC uses a custom version of Ubuntu 10 with a simple-to-use navigation system. There's a fully customizable "Me Menu" that provides access to the most visited websites and programs straight from the desktop, and of course the icons and text have been enlarged for easier viewing.

The KiWi PC is available now for $500.
