A guide to the Quake engine??? Please

I posted this in general discussion and I thought it would be better to post it here. So anyway. . .

Hello all, I have been looking through the web for a guide to how to use the quake engine. from what i learned, I have to use the source and build it from there. From what i understnd people made maps and stuff makers for the engine as well.

I want a guide of some sort that teaches me how to use it and how to make maps for it and stuff. And also if someone can point me out to a map maker as well or a full on engine.

If I can't get this then please give me a guide or something for the Doom engine.
