Nintendo almost invariably make good consoles and specifically aim them at the younger market - they own that niche.
If Nintendo stopped then it would only really be Sony on the market - they'd essntially have a monopoly on gaming hardware, which isn't good because then they can charge what they want.

Xbox? Yeah right, technically the best machine but nothing special in the games (except Halo), so it isn't any real competition to either Nintendo or Sony. Most of their games are available on the PC. The damn thing is a PC - and a secondhand PC of the same specs as the Xbox is fastly becoming the same price as one.
Probably being a bit unfair to the xbox but I don't see anything special about it.

Nintendo also have control of the handheld market though they may run in to problems with the PSP. Having said that the Nokia N-Gage didn't sell that well even though it had some of the best games from the PSX on it - probably because it was clunky and overpriced. Hopefully the competition between Sony and Nintendo with the handhelds will force Nintendo to take their handhelds more seriously and stop porting games from earlier machines or allowing third party trash like Spongebob and all to be released.

I miss the days of the Commodore 64 and Amiga - back then companies worried less about the marketing side of games - they were, for the most part, more creative and original about what they created.
