Final Fantasy XIII

My dad is really into Final Fantasy, and I don't know much about it. Is the new game supposed to be as good as the other ones?

I would expect the usual eye candy for FFXIII. However I can not say that I am fond of combat systems that make me feel like I am playing a game of tennis.
