i would say that your machine is too slow. try turning the settings down. My machine Opty 165 1 gig ddr geforce 7900gs is much faster than yours and im stuck with low settings on 640x480 with stalker. Your machine may not be able to cut it. either that or it could be a memory error, but normally if that happens windows will kill the game and tell you.

640x480? You can't be serious! That is for integrated video dude.

are you playing this on vista?

and zmatt...somethings wrong with your gfx card, or your drivers.
I had the opty and the 7900gs and i was playing stalker on med-high settings, would fps of 25-50

No, XP Pro. I have increased the page file by 1GB, and that hepls a bit, but it still crashes. I will try to install the new drivers and see how that goes.
