Are there any quality Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2 antivirus programs that are free?

Sadly for a Server based OS there is no real good free solutions. MSE has a client for Servers called Forefront. But it isnt free.

Have you heard good reviews of Forefront? If it is half a good as MSE i'd give it a go.

I have actually tried it and it is MSE and then some. It is like Eset Smart Security but the Microsoft version. Using the MSE engines but built for businesses. You know that Beta tester thing.

I would seriously try it out. I enjoyed it for the short time i tested it.

Microsoft Forefront: Home

You will see that the Forefront Client actually looks a lot like the current MSE client. They are very similar. Not saying that it is your only choice since i know Eset has a Server Edition. But of the 2 i would go with Forefront.

Don't forget to review what programs and services are running on the server - then disable them from the real-time scanning (if so needed).
AV on a server can be a nightmare if you're not careful.
Other good companies (unfortunately not free) are AVG, CA and BitDefender - just for some pricing and feature comparisons to FF.

I would also suggest Panda Anti-virus. (The Business Secure product).
We're used it on loads of our IT Support customers around London and it seems to work well. Quite lightweight and their support is great (in the UK anyway).

Sophos is good I use it.
