Has any kind of computer virtualization ever been used in social studies ?
I mean like creating a virtual environment where you can simulate a standard society and study the behaviors and interactions .
has any one ever tried anything similar ?

Yep, The Sims. Or for online games... Second Life. Or WoW. Honestly any MMO game has some sort of "society" and could easily be studied.

No guys i think you got it all wrong . I mean something more sophisticated than a game .
For example creating a functioning and virtual society , like today's world , but with such a high artificial intelligence that this society actually makes its own history and culture . Then we can simulate the current world events in the program .
Scientist today use computer simulations in many fields (physics, chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, etc....) i was just wondering if we can create a virtual population which can be used for legitimate social experiments .

Oh I'm sorry, i misunderstood you....

Civilization V does a pretty good job of this too, another Sid Meier blockbuster.
