My old computer with XP had a recording device that had options to record sounds from at least three sources, e.g. “Line In”, “Microphone”, “Stereo”, “Wave”, and etcetera. My new computer with XP (using the SigmaTel Audio Playback/Recording device) only allows recording from “Line In” and “Microphone”.

Is this an XP update that was designed to prevent us from recording sounds played within the computer? Is there a way to enable recording with this update from within the computer? Is there playback/recording device available for XP that has such a feature. I've noticed from browsing message boards that the latest versions of XP and Vista seem to have this problem/exclusion.

It is up to the type of Soundcard or integrated audio to have "features" like recording from different sources. A basic Soundblaster Live card will have the recording options you want. That SigmaTel is basically just enough to get audio output, lacking the features of your previous computer soundcard.
