VLC has failed me, and since all of the Google results are from 2006, I figured I'd just ask the simple question. What's your favorite video player? Thanks in advance.

I have no issues with VLC, but Windows Media Player should play HD .avi files, and others.

Yeah, I have all my Blu-rays ripped, and play them in 1080p, in VLC.

They're .mkv and .avi (a couple of them I ripped as both, to compare). No special settings in VLC, if that's what you mean.

make sure you have the latest version? and what kind of hardware are you running? my computer is older and can't play 1080p video very well.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be my rig. 3.1GHz Pentium D, 3GB RAM, 8800gts GPU

If you're rig is that old, I'd say the hard drive could be the culprit. An older, slower hdd with a tiny amount of cache isn't going to like 1080p playback :)

hmm, those specs don't seem bad at all....

my pc is a 2.5 GHz P4 with 1 GB DDR266 and a 256MB FX5700, and it plays 720p reasonably well. just not flash video...
