I'm sick of using WMP because of its lack of codec support and so I've been looking into other video-media players. The two main ones that popped up were VLC and MPC - the latter ebing no longer supported I downloaded and tried out VLC.

The deinterlacing options in VLC and the general quality was not as good as WMP's... could anyone suggest / reccomend the 'WinAmp' of video players?

If you like winamp, not many do for video, Download the k-lite codec pack and you are in business. VLC player is what many people prefer and use. You also have media player classic. I use power DVD with the k-lite codec pack and can play anything worth watching.

Download K-Lite Codec Pack

I suppose I should just tweak the video output and interlacing modes...

While we're on topic, could you suggest the most future-proof / current best video container? Everything I get my hands on tese days seems to be .avi but I was wondering whether something new / better has come out?

EDIT: No matter what I try VLC's deinterlacing doesn't seem to work...
