yeah nero does suck at encoding.......caus it doesn't work........
i downloaded and bought winavi and converted the .avi file to a dvd and then burnt it and it played fine.
also which is the better format to save to hard drive from the video capture avi or mpeg?

thanx

uncompressed avi (there are different type of avi) is the absolute best capture format, but that file will be usually large as no compression technique is used. you will get the best quality
all mpegs types are compressed in one way or another (though if it is done right, you probably couldn't tell the difference with the avi)

an uncompressed avi hour video might take up 5 gig

the format options from the capture are

-dv
-avi
-mpeg
-wmv
-vcd

out of those not including avi which is the best format to convert to dvd?

dvd=mpeg2 720x480 for NTSC, video bitrate up to 8000,audio=ac3 or mpeg2 bitrate up to 400

those are the required specs for a video file to be dvd format before converting to vob's

Generally if your going to capture in some other format you want as much or better quality wise than the above mentioned specs, however with TV capture unless its HDTV your prettymuch stuck with VHS quality to begin with,so use vcd which is mpeg1,352x288(ntsc)video bitrate=1100 and audio bitrate of 224 OR mpeg if it will let you have better settings than that(it should), that way when you convert to dvd you will get a much better picture.Always take the best quality you can get.

I usually encode straight into mpeg2 with TV @640x480 and a bitrate of around 16-1800 and mpeg2 sound @ 224 bitrate
