Default TV Tuners

Okay, YES I have searched and no I cannot find a tutorial on this.

Anyone know of any good sites that sell good quality TV Tuners that will allow me to watch and record (only at certain times) live TV onto my HDD using a TV tuner while taking advantage of whatever channels the current subscription gives me (basically college cable).

Thanks guys.

Any TV Tuner will do this, I recommend the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150, or PVR-500, you can get them on Newegg.

So how exactly do you use it, does it come with software that is designed to do it?

Also, can you use it WITHOUT MCE? Or is there other software you need to use a TV tuner if you do not have MCE?

Ah, just saw some of the cards are designed for MCE some are designed for just non MCE. Now, these are the two I found.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116625

and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116602

As far as I see the two main differences is the fact of the input ports, is that all or am I missing something, I probably will get the 137 dollar one simply because its cheapter than buying a 19" TV and a DVR recorder, can just download to my HDD.

I can use it like that correct?

BTW, I found a PVR- 500 but it looks like it is ONLY MCE and one of the reviews says it can be **** to get it to work and I have professional so I do not want to have to worry about that. Will a 250 work as wel, seems good since it has onboard encoding into MPEG so I do not have to worry about it. Will it work for my needs?

Watch TV, Record onto my HDD, be able to burn onto a DVD, and able to just watch from the HDD.

Basically I am just afraid of buying it and finding that I need to spend 100 dollars more to get it to work and loose out on the 15% restocking fee.

Sorry for all the questions/edits guys.

Thanks for the help =)

I had an nvidia nvtv card that gave great results. however only media center can work it

I now have an ati home theater pro card. it works with media center and other applications like windvd creator and windows media encoder.

So, any idea if the ones I listed would work with Windows XP?

You can do it without MCE, but I haven't had any experience with it. I use MythTV on Debian Linux.

http://www.gbpvr.com/ <- try this, it's like MythTV for Windows.

I'll try it tonight at let you know if it's good.

So basically I need extra software to do it without MCE? Like this GB-PVR

Yes, well, the card itself comes with some software but I don't really like it ... at all ... it's terrible ... And I forgot to try GBPVR last night, sorry.

Yeah they are good, that one is way overpriced, and neither of them have yellow/red/white inputs. If I were you I'd one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116620
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116631
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116616

And if you feel like spending $120+, these three are awesome:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116633
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116632
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116628

By the way, I tired out GB-PVR. It works just like you'd expect it to, fast forward, rewind, pause live TV, schedule recordings, it gets a catalog of TV shows off the internet for you, you can search for shows. It actually works really well, a lot better that Media Centre, in my experience. And it's free.
