thumb drive problem

I'm trying to use a thumb drive. It uses an SD card as the storage medium. The problem is that first, about half the time that I plug it into an open USB port, I get the message that a USB device has failed. When I go to the Device manager, it's listed as an unknown device in the USB hubs. Secondly, on the occaisons that the computer does recognize the drive, I cannot get the computer to open any media files contained on it.
I've tried uninstalling the hub and reinstalling to no avail. The trouble shooter only asks me for drivers of which there aren't any.
The player will open, but never actually plays the file regardless if it's audio or video.
Anyone got any ideas?

try different usb ports

try device on different computers. if same problems happens on other computers, you may have faulty hardware.

try different sd cards.
