Strange Sub-woofer Sounds

I just bought a set of cheap speakers for my desktop...Cyber Acoustics 3080...got 'em for 28 bucks or something. They sound just fine considering their price, but the woofer seems to have a bit of a quirk. Every minute or two (when not in use) it makes a subtle (yet distracting) popping sound...like 2 or 3 popcorn kernels popping quietly. I bought the system out of state, so can't return it easily. Anyone aware of the cause of and/or solution to the weird noise?

loose wire? check the connections or if anything sounds loose on the inside.
