Sound quality

Hey guys,
Is the sound quality of your computer determined by either the Speakers or the actual sound card? I am thinking of upgrading my speakers from standard createve 2.1's to the Logitech Z-5500. My sound card at the moment is a pretty shitty 16bit one. If I bought the new speakers would I notice any difference in the sound quality if I still kept the same sound card? If not, I was thinking of buying the Creative Audigy 2ZS Digital Entertainment Card, it's fairly standard but with those kind of speakers would I be better of spending a fair bit of money on them and upgrading to the Audigy 2ZS Platnium?

You'll notice a difference with either upgrade. Doing both definitely wont hurt anything!

***Anybody who has the Z-5500 speakers please listen up cause i need your advice...***

I am thinking of connecting the Z-5500 up to my room, how long are the cords for the rear two speakers? Can you re-wire the cords to make them longer or will this void the warranty? I need about 5m for each speaker...
