Sound is delaying

sometimes wen my system makes sudden sounds, like msn or system alerts, it doesn't play them. I have no problems playing MP3s. i just have problems with sudden sounds. does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?

so what is happening exactly... the sounds are delaying and playing after the event that is supposed to trigger them? or they're not playing at all?

sometimes they dont play, sometimes they delay, and sometimes they play normally

do the delays occur during periods of high cpu usage?

this occurs at low and high cpu usauge
