Default Recording Music

During the past few weeks ive been looking around to see what kind of sound cards i can buy that will let me record music. By recording music i mean, hookind up a guitar, or a mic or such liek that to a sound card so i can record it, i have bought the software to do so already. So now, to get ot my question, what are my choices on sound cards like there, i went to new egg and i found some sort of midi sound card, will this work to record music from a guitar?

90% of sound card has a line in input

you buy a 1/4 to 1/8 plug and hook your guitar up
