I want to record sound bites from DVDs that I play on my laptop's DVD player. Apparently sound recorder can't do this.

What do I need to do to record the audio that is coming out of my computer's speakers?

How to extract only the wav file from VOB

smartripper download

You want to de-mux the VOB files to generate/rip the ac3. Once you have the ac3 file you can convert to a wav/mp3/etc. Most ripper will do this but in smartripper:

1) Choose titleset/video of interest
2) Click on stream processess
3) Click on enable streaming processes
4) Click on the audio stream of interest, then click de-mux
5) CLick run

This will rip the ac3 file to your HD. Then use one of the programs below to convert it (or get an ac3 player):

why can't things be easy??\

So I ran smartripper and found that I don't have an ASPI layer. I got ForceASPI to install but have no idea what it is. It talks about deleting my current ASPI layer. Does that matter? I don't think I have one anyway.

Easiest thing to do:
Use audacity, quality won't be as good but it is better than sound recorder's.

audacity is free!

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Open audacity, select wave out mix, hit the red record button, and start playing the DVD.

*Sometimes disabling the microphone amplifying setting on windows reduces background noise.

Try this before downloading any software......the easiest thing (provided your soundcard is capable of it...which it probably is) is doubleclick the sound icon in your tray....
Options -> Properties -> Recording -> make sure all the options are checked -> OK -> select an option on the mixer that contains CD or DVD. Now try recording. If that doesn't work, go back to the recording mixer and select "What U Hear". Now goto sound recorder and try again. If that doesn't work, then I'd try the above-mentioned suggestions.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for. I knew it could be done this way, but I couldn't get it to work. I just didn't have the 'CD' box checked for recording.

THANK YOU!!!!

ac3 decode, dvd audio ripper (both free)and dvd copy4 will automatically do it for you. you can't make any other sound with the computer using sound recorder
