Problems transfering tapes to mp3/CD using Audacity

I am trying to transfer tapes to my computer using a basic Durabrand Radio CD/Tape player with a cord plugged in the headphone port going to the mic port on my sound card. I am trying to use Audacity to record the sound and then output it as mp3. The problem is that the audio coming in is mostly static and I can barely hear what is actually on the tape. I know the tape player works fine cause when I unplug it the sound is fine. I have tried plugging it into my onboard mic port but that doesn't help. I can post makes and model of my mobo and sound card if that will help.
