Playing DVD in a CD-ROM ?

hey there , i got a question ( forgive it may sound silly )...;)

Is there a way to play a DVD disc in my CD-ROM drive ??
a friend dedicated me a dvd movie , and wn i place it in my cd-rom it even cant see it , and asks me to insert a disc in the drive ( with the disc inside )

I thought there may be a way to play dvd on a cd-rom , as PS games could be played on the PC...u know guys ...wierd things happen...:D ........

There isn't a way to do this that I am aware of (but would be cool). However, you can *RIP* the DVD to your hard drive and then either:
A) Use DVD playback software to watch it from there. or
2. Encode it with DivX or encode it to an MPEG and then burn it to a disc (or even better, make an SVCD or VCD out of it).
 
But how can you rip it if you don't have the DVD drive to read it in the first place.................
 
DVD players use lasers of a different frequency/power to CD players (cdrw's etc) and have 2 data tracks at different physical levels on the DVD disk (ie 2 layers wheresas CD's are single layer) on top of that there is also the not so small problem of the file system on a DVD.
So, unfortunately without a DVD player/burner your stuffed.
