photoshop/gimp project

i need to make a picture that says "Number 7" and has flames coming towards the viewer from the edges of the letters, just like the flames in the quake 3 main menu.

how should i go about doing thing??

have you given any thought to which program you would like to use to make this...

do you have one already? (what o/s? mac? windows?)

if not, some suggestions may include..
Adobe Photoshop (CS)
Macromedia Fireworks (8)

maybe Macromeda Illustrator

... I would recommend PhotoShop, but if someone knows a better program please add to this list.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is probably your best bet, Its free, and works under Windows, Mac OS and Linux. See more info here.

i have photoshop and the gimp for windows and mac and gimp linux, im still confused as to how i should go about it. the perspective from the fire is really hard to simulate
