I have Windows 98SE (I know, I know...it's a work PC)
One day the sound stopped coming out of my speakers. No Windows sounds, no CD audio, no .mp3, .wav, nothing. I tweaked all the typical settings, volume, mute, went to the Multimedia Properties in Control Panel and everything is default and should be working. The sound icon is in my tray, the speakers work.
I thought I would have to buy a new sound card.
Until I plugged in my External DVD burner (it's USB 2.0), and played a DVD. Guess what...I could hear the audio on the DVD!!!
So my speakers obviously work, sound card works, why can't I get sound in any other media?
The only think I can think of, is I have a keyboard with those volum and mute buttons, and it has a driver called "Hotkey 2.0". I thought that might be the culprit. So I uninstalled it, but still no sound. So I reinstalled it, and still no sound.

HELP!!!
