.m4a ----> .mp3

I am trying to convert .m4a and .cda files to .mp3 files so that they are compatible with my iRiver. I know that there is some downloadable software (~20 bucks) that would do the trick. Is there an easier (free) way to do this, and if not any suggestions on good audio file converting software?

Most audio conversion software you'll find will cost you some $$$. I don't know of anything that you could get for free to do that though...

VLC media player has been able to convert everything i needed...but i havn't tried converting the extensions you mentioned.
