it is the same as mp3, but it does at better job at quality, and the size of the encoded files is generally smaller.
 
I don't like m4a's.


I tried to change the IDtags on a few, and BAM, the files were rendered to 5megs of unreadable data.


wavs and mp3s are about all I deal with. sometimes aiff, but that's pretty much wav.
 
I'd rather use tried and tested technology. I try to stick with at least 192kbps for mp3's. Im not ready for the m4a move.

I usually use 160 as my low---the only real noticible distortion at that bitrate is cymbals, mostly. For stuff I really like to listen to, I rip straight to wav, though.
 
m4a is based off AAC. the compression methd for minidisc. it is a better compression method than mp3 (it throws away less data), but you will have compatibilties issues.

it is also a great compression rate for video (mp4).
