fast audio playback problem

i have a p3 1.000 compaq EN pro desktop computer.
Windows 2000. Whenever i play audio, files, streaming, cds. The playback will be fast, even the windows start up music is fast. I tried replacing the hdd with a fresh installation and still same problem. I updated the drivers all seem to be working fine. I am wondering if this is a software issue or soundcard. Its an onboardon soundcard. Any help on this would be thankful

Sounds like your sound card is running at a higher sample rate then it's reporting, or it's synced to a device operating at a higher sample rate. Are you using S/PDIF?

Most probably your drivers if you've formatted still to no success.

Try going to Start > Run > Type dxdiag then press enter > Once the DirectX Diagnostic Tool appears, click on the Sound Tab > Make sure Full Acceleration is selected, then click to Test Directsound.
