dvd burning question: vhs to dvd

i got this dvd vcr player (an SV2000) and I have been burning tapes onto dvds, the problem is these dvds play fine on the DVD/VCR player but they do not play at all on my lap top. am I doing something wrong? I have made sure the dvd is filled all the way up before attempting to play it on my comp.

What kind of DVDs are you using? What drive do you have?
