digi cam videos

I have a Cannon Powershot A520 digital camera. It can record video in .avi format. It plays fine on the camera and when the a/v adaptor is plugged into the TV or DVD player. However, once I upload the video to my computer, the video is all messed up and there's noise, bars, lines, static. Basically unplayable. Any idea or thoughts to solve this problem? Thanks...
