Cutting .avi files

What is a good program (preferably freeware) that can cut avi files in to smaller files? The source file is 7GB and I tried moviesplitter, and it wouldn't load the file, I also tried quicktime pro and it would only load the first 10 mins of the clip which goes for about an hour.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to keep a middle portion of the file and ditch the rest.

you could use windows video editor which is already installed if you have windows

Virtualdub mod <--- I think that is what it's called. Is that a super long video or is it just uncompressed?

google auto gordian knot ,, that should do it, i use that to encode dvd movies into avi files and you can choose files sizes and so forth
