Converting DVDs to DivX/Avi

Does anyone know approximately how long it would take to convert a DVD disk into a avi file? Does it usually take longer to convert it to 1.4gb or 700mb?

well 700 megs fits a cd and 1.4 gigs will fit two...but I believe it isn't twice as long for 1.4 gigs, just a little bit longer. Either way make sure you aren't breaking copyright law... happy transcoding

depends on software used and speed of system

more compression means more time to encode

2hr movie encoded to xvid using mencoder and done on the fly on a 2800+ sempron system at dvd resolution, about 45mins for a 2hr movie

about 90mins to compress to 700mb on same

not all encoders are as fast as others, some can take hours or days
