How exactly is "data" stored on a compact disk? Furthermore, how is it stored on any disk.... what keeps it there?

I believe the lazer burns a tiny hole (pit) into the CD, when it being read, the areas that are pitted and the areas that are not pitted correlate to 1s adn 0s, and thats all data is anyways..

CDRWs use a special film that allow the 'pit' to be filled in and re burnt, but they lose this ability over time.
