Can't Play mp4 files

I have some mp4 files and I can't play any of them. I am trying to use Quick Time and/or Windows media player.

In quicktime i get this error message:
error -204: couldn't open file because it is not a file that quick time understands.

how do i fix this?

Have you tried installing a codex package? Or using VLC to play them ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ )?

Yes i Tried VLC and no luck. I am not sure where to dl a codec pack.

I thought mp4 was a generic file type that windows media player (the newest version) and quick time could play by default.

Check MajorGeeks.com and click "Multimedia" on the left side. All kinds of codecs packages. I would recommend the CCC or one by Skark007. If you have Vista or 7, go with this: |MG| Vista Codec Package 5.9.5 Final Download

If you are running x64, get this one to go with it: |MG| x64 Components 2.8.8 Download

installed it and it still won't work... the same files does work on my other computers...

Just an off thought... check your programs and filetypes defaults and see what is selected for MP4.

Thanks for you help, but I did a system restore last night and it seemed to have fixed the problem. Quick Time still doesn't like the file, but Windows Media Plays them fine.
