Avid on custom build

I want to get Avid Media Composer, but obviously my computer isn't listed as a "qualified work station." I currently have an Asus p6t, i7 920, 750W psu with a single 12v rail, a 1TB 7200 rpm hdd, a GTX 260 (with plans to add a quadro FX, not sure which yet), and 3GB DDR3 ram (probably get more of that too). I assume she can handle it, but does it have something to do with licensing? I thought maybe Avid could have a deal worked out to only sell copies to work on certain prebuilt machines. Also, if there are any Avid users out there, how much can you get done with just the software? I haven't used it yet, but I have used Protools a lot, and it seemed to require the Mbox to function, but I didn't use it for much beyond plugging in speakers. Is the hardware necessary? Any comments are appreciated.
