98SE with no sound

I keep getting an error while trying to play .avi files or .wmv files. whenever I play games I have no sound aswell. everyone I've talked to has either suggested buy a new sound card, or use the system restore diskette. problem- the restore diskeete is lost. another problem is- the sound card is built into the mother board.... There must be another way to work around this, any help would be great.

Lets start here,have you ever had sound since you installed the drivers ? do you see this on the taskbar ?
If so dclick it.
