Lived in a rural area from 99 until 2010. WISP broadband didn't hit the area until around mid 2008 and from 2003 until then I was stealing somebody else's sat net which had pings way too high for a server and random DCs when somebody used the microwave. So I hosted a private server on a dialup connection from a bunch of free Netzero CDs I got from Walmart.

That's insane. Even during BC I would lag enough to cause a d/c and that was on 15M broadband. I can't imagine the frustration I would have encountered trying to do that on dial up...

It was actually fine. The only issue we had was the occasional rubber band. There were like 8 of us that all played at the same time.
