u no like the t-shirts that r making fun of the phrase got milk by saying got root. all i know is it has something to do with hacking or programming and all my friends at school wont tell me

In terms of systems .... In Linux/unix etc... the "root" user ...is the like an administrator account .. the one with all the rights etc..

Root would also mean the main folder that contains everything

I used to have a sig somethin' like this "Life's Tough but ..root password helps "

%root% is system root(i.e. Windows)

The root is as far down the directory tree as you can go..
for example, the root of drive c: would be...

c:\

since c:\ is not contained within any other directory.
