Robotics and programming

This is about a project i am about to start working on...I wanted to know which programming languages are best suited for robotics...for AI, for embedded systems programming, etc...please suggest any site or book that would help out with these concepts..

Assembly, C, some sort of HDL (hardware description language), and the like would all be worthwhile to check out. For software AI, I know LISP is popular. I know Microsoft has a Robotics software package that you may want to take a look into.

my team is confused about which microcontroller will be suitable for the autonomous bot...arduino ones, AVR or PIC for the given task (fast grid solving and line following)?

I am really new to this subject so please dont mind if i am confusing any terminology, and please tell me where i am wrong.
