Reverse engineering?

So i have some old tools from an old boot disk that i used to use a lot. Some of the tools do relatively simple things and i'd like to see specifically what they're doing. They're .exe though is there any way to see exactly whats happening behind-the-scenes?

.NET uses Reflection: Reflection in .NET - CodeProject

Won't really work for non-.NET apps though..

You can use a disassembly tool, but you'll need to know how to read Assembly since that's what it will disassemble into.
