lga775 with atleast the 975x chipset.

No. That's simply the only chipset avaliable right now. There are lower-end chipsets from Intel, ATi, and Nvidia that are going to be released soon.

A motherboard with a 975X chipset would cost over $200.

A motherboard with a 946GZ chipset would cost under $100.

Bit of a difference there.

if you already have a 775 socket mobo can you use conroe? im guessing that you would need to flash your bios though.

Yea I figured that you'd have to flash the bios but I'm not too sure about the choipset compatibility though.
