What is over clocking?

In general, it's increasing the clock speed of a processor (either CPU or GPU) and/or memory above the stock speeds.

It's done to squeeze more performance out of components but can sometimes shorten the life of the component.

oh that makes sense. But in the long run the part could break faster and you would have to replace it?

Depending on how much you overclock it, and if proper cooling is used, the life can still be just as long as it normally would be.

Any computer part can die without any extra tweaking. You just can't overboard with overclocking or increase your cooling to make up for it.

For instance, an engine doesn't die simply from adding horsepower. If you don't do the necessary upgrades it can though.
