Basically i'm wondering if I could turn this fan (40mm) off on my motherboard because its a loud noisey fan!

Its sitting above the AGP chip on the motherboard. I dont really use my PC for games much so does anyone think it would be okay to switch it off without causing to much damage?

Or would there be a way of monitoring the temp of the chip when this fan is turned off?

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP (quite old now!)

Any information appreciated. Thanks.

Use Everest to see if it picks up any sensor, most likely it won't though...

I guess you could try unplugging the fan, and use the plain' old method of touching the heatsink to see if it gets hot. If it gets too hot, it'll decrease the life of your motherboard dramatically.

That isn't just an agp chipset it is your northbridge chipset and if you shut it off your board will overheat and lead to reduced service life. But like CrazeD said buy and aftermarket pasive cooling (no fan) heatsink for the northbridge and you should be good to go.
